Bellopuerto Mexico City

May 13, 2016 by Ricky Leave a Comment

A sunny Sunday afternoon in Mexico City and after sauntering through the Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City, lunch with a couple of mojitos seemed in order.  Located a few blocks away from the museum, the bustling Bellopuerto restaurant looked like the ideal spot to set up camp for the afternoon.

It was busy and it did take us about 20 mins to get a table but that didn’t mean we couldn’t sit at the bar and start sampling the mojitos and margaritas.  We were lucky to get a table outside on the street – the ideal place for a sunny afternoon and were handed english menus that were split into two main sections – ‘Cocktails’ and ‘Tacos’ – perfect!

Bellopuerto

Xicama Tacos

More drinks and the first taco to try, the house speciality – Xicama Tacos.  Xicama root tortillas with marinated shrimp and a hibiscus sauce.  The shrimp was seasoned perfectly and the interesting hibiscus sauce added another depth of flavour and also served to make the dish extremely colourful and funky.

We moved onto the Tuna Fish Taco and, again, the “secret” marinade was absolutely spot on all served in a light and fresh flour tortilla with the tuna cooked just right.

Next up was their self-declared “must” – Octopus Machito Tacos.  Unfortunately, this was a bit of a disappointment.  The octopus was overly charred and the only flavour to come through was that of an extremely chewy piece of charcoal.  Well, another margarita to rinse the taste out and then on to the final taco of the day.

Bellopuerto

Octopus Taco

The Tijuana Taco, steak and shrimp with cheddar cheese and served with refried beans – the shear definition of Tex-mex!  Well, I don’t know what else to say.  It’s grilled steak and shrimp in a flour tortilla with cheese.  It neither blew me away nor did it sink to the octopus’ level.

Bellopuerto is a great spot to spend an afternoon sipping refreshing drinks watching other people doing the same.  The drinks are great and the tacos perfectly good.  It’s a place that you won’t regret – just don’t get the octopus.

Fresh Ingredients for Lunch at Teppanyaki Yamanami

Teppan-yaki Yamanami, Tokyo

August 15, 2017 By Ricky Leave a Comment

With over 130,000 restaurants in Tokyo, trying to find one to visit can prove a daunting task.  This is where a good hotel concierge comes in.  After discussions as to what I was looking for, my concierge had no hesitation in recommending Teppan-yaki Yamanami in the Shinjuku area of Tokyo.  So off I went.

Träkol, Newcastle

July 24, 2023 By Ricky Leave a Comment

The name Träkol suggests Scandinavian furniture in many pieces, missing screws and requires many beverages and expletives to put together.  Indeed, Träkol is Scandinavian, Swedish in fact; and it means charcoal – the name of a well rated restaurant in Newcastle, U.K.

Blue Elephant, Phuket

Blue Elephant is synonymous for their Thai ingredient range available in supermarkets globally and cooking schools in various Thai cities. They also have highly acclaimed restaurants in some cities – like the one in Phuket that is located in the old governor’s mansion.
